Putting the Home Back in Nursing Home
Good Shepherd to Begin $13 Million Construction Project
August 3, 2009 marks the beginning of a $13 million addition and renovation of Good Shepherd Lutheran Home. Good Shepherd Lutheran Home is a 162-bed skilled nursing facility and the cornerstone of The Good Shepherd Community, a 30-acre senior living campus covering four city blocks located in Sauk Rapids, Minnesota.
The nursing facility currently consists of a one-story building with seven resident wings. The 162 beds are located in 93 rooms, 24 of which are private and 69 of which are shared. Upon completion of the construction and remodeling, the 162 beds will be located in eight resident households, encompassing 154 private rooms and only four shared rooms.
The construction and remodeling plans have been approved by the Minnesota Department of Health under its nursing facility moratorium exception program. The project is planned to be completed in two phases within the next 18 months. Phase I will consist of the construction of two, two-story buildings adjoining the existing facility. These two new buildings will include four resident households. Phase II will consist of renovating the existing facility to include redesigning existing resident rooms into four resident households as well as the creation of a Main Street area including lobby and reception area, an enlarged coffee and gift shop, a new theater and activity space, a Welcome and Hospitality Suite, and consolidated administrative offices. The General Contractor for the construction and renovation project is Miller Architects and Builders of St. Cloud.
